BORN HULL 1898. ENLISTED GRIMSBY. LIVED IMMINGHAM. SON OF RALPH RATCLIFFE (1872-1907) & BETSEY ANN MITCHELL (1875-1952). HIS MOTHER MARRIED JOHN ROBERT HANSON, A LABOURER ON GRIMSBY DOCKS. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN. HE ENLISTED IN GRIMSBY AND JOINED THE 4TH SPECIAL RESERVE SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT. HE DIED A GERMAN PRISONER OF WAR, ON 15/10/1918, AGED 20. HE IS BURIED AT NIEDERZWEHREN CEMETERY, KASSEL, GERMANY.
HIS STEP BROTHER, PRIVATE, RALPH MITCHELL, 12TH NORFOLK REGIMENT, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 08/09/1918, AGED 19. THEIR MOTHER BETSY, HAD LOST TWO SONS IN THE WAR WITHIN A MONTH.
