Newby, Charles Steel

Hull Pals Memorial Post. Private, CHARLES STEEL NEWBY 13/522. Born in Hull, 1894, Charles was an orphan fostered by Mr Marr Dale, of 7, Heeley Grove, Division Road, Hull. A Labourer by trade he enlisted on 19th November 1914 joining the 13th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, “T’Others”, 4th Hull Pals. Posted abroad on 29th December 1915, to Egypt. He served in all the major campaigns of the Pal’s war- Egypt, the Somme, Oppy Wood, Arras, the Spring Offensive and but for a spell hospitalised with influenza seems to have made it through in good health. That is until he was gassed at Soyer Farm and died coughing his lungs up in a casualty clearing station on 1st October 1918. His army records tell their own story- no spouse, no children, no parents, no siblings, no uncles and aunts, no grandparents- there was literally no-one to mourn his passing. Charles is buried in La Kreule Military Cemetery; he was 24 years old. His name was included on the ww1 Memorial, at St John The Baptist Church, Newington, Hull.
