Petty, Robert Percy

BORN BEVERLEY 1895. SON OF GEORGE HENRY PETTY (1858-1921) & THE LATE MARY REBECCA HALLETT (1858-1909), OF 8 BOTANIC AVENUE, CAVE STREET, HULL.(CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD FIVE BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER. WORKED FOR WILLIAM CUSSONS BEFORE THE WAR. SERVED IN THE MERCHANT NAVY FOR 18 MONTHS. DROWNED WHEN HIS SHIP SANK ON 17/06/1917, AGED 22. HIS DEATH & ADDRESS WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 22/06/1917. LISTED IN THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY ROLL OF HONOUR. COMMEMORATED ON THE TOWER HILL NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON.

STANHOPE SS was a British Merchant steamer of 2,854grt. On the 17th June 1917 when on route from Barrow for Dunkirk she was torpedoed by German submarine UB-31 and sunk when 7 miles Sw x W from Start Point, Devon. Owned by Letricheux & David Ltd, Swansea. ref. used:His Majesty’S Stationary Office, British Merchant Shipping (Losses) WW1 Carl Racey † 17/06/2010 From 1917 the STANHOPE was managed by Letricheux & David Ltd.; On 17/06/1917 torpedoed by UB-31 when 7 miles SW by W of Start Point in 50.08N 03.45W on passage Barrow for Dunkerque with rails.
