BORN HULL, 1887. SON OF GEORGE WILLIAM POWLEY (1858-1896) AND SARAH ANN JOHNSON (1860-1907). SON OF A DOCK LABOURER. HE HAD THREE SISTERS AND A BROTHER.

BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED AS A BAKERS DELIVERY MAN/CONFECTIONER, FOR MR TEANBY BAKER’S, SOUTHCOATES LANE, HULL.

HE MARRIED, HANNAH WHITE (1889-1962), AT COGAN STREET CHURCH, HULL, ON 18/12/1910, AGED 23. THEY HAD TWO SONS, CYRIL AND ALBERT. LIVED AT 28 WYNBURG STREET, HULL, IN 1917 AND LATER 57 STEYNBURG STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS)

ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 24/06/1916. CALLED UP FOR SERVICE, ON 14/04/1917. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6 INCHES TALL, 135 LBS WEIGHT, 38 INCH CHEST SIZE. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 19/11/1918, WITH THE ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY.

ACCIDENTALLY KILLED BY EXPLOSION AFTER WAR, AGED 32. LEFT HIS WIDOW AND TWO CHILDREN AT 37 , STEYNBURG STREET, HULL. SHE WAS AWARDED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION OF 25 SHILLINGS AND SIXPENCE FOR HERSELF AND HER TWO CHILDREN, WITH EFFECT FORM 18/08/1919. (HULL DAILY MAIL STORY, REPORTED ON  06/02/1919).

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 5TH FEBRUARY 1919, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HE IS BURIED AT LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY, WEST-VLAANDEREN, BELGIUM.

HIS BROTHER, CHARLES PHILIP POWLEY WAS A PRISONER OF WAR FOR NINE MONTHS AFTER SERVING THREE YEARS IN FRANCE. HE LEFT SISTERS, HARRIET, MINNIE AND OLIVE.
