Pridmore MID, George William

BORN RUTLAND, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, 14/05/1885. SON OF JOHN PRIDMORE AND SARAH MASON, OF 136 FIRST AVENUE, VERDUN, MONTREAL, CANADA.

HE ENLISTED IN THE CORNWALL LIGHT INFANTRY IN 1901. SERVED WITH THEM ON SOUTH AFRICA FOR ONE YEAR. TRANSFERRED TO THE NORTHANTS REGIMENT, IN 1903. SERVED WITH THE COLOURS FOR SIX YEARS AND PASSED INTO THE RESERVES. BECAME A PRISON WARDEN AT HULL’S HEDON ROAD PRISON.

HE WAS ONE OF THE “EAST HULL FANCIERS”, SHOWING PIDGEONS AND CAVIES. HE MARRIED MABEL PRIESTMAN (1887-1960),  AT HULL’S BAPTIST CHURCH, ON 26/08/1911. THEY LIVED AT 17 GRINDELL STREET, HEDON ROAD, HULL, WITH THEIR TWO DAUGHTERS, MIRRIAM AND FLORENCE.

HE WAS CALLED UP AT THE START OF THE WAR AND ARRIVED IN FRANCE ON 01/11/1914. SERVED AS SERGEANT IN THE 1ST NORTHAMPTONSHIRE REGIMENT. WHILE TRYING TO SAVE THE LIFE OF A WOUNDED OFFICER, HE WAS KILLED AT LA BASSEE, ON 22/12/1914, AGED 29. HE IS BURIED THERE. SGT PRIDMORE, WAS MENTIONED IN LORD FRENCH’S DESPATCH, GAZETTED ON 22/06/1915, FOR HIS GALLANT AND DISTINGUISHED SERVICE IN THE FIELD. HE IS COMMEMORATED AT LE TOURET MILITARY CEMETERY, RICHEBOURG-L’AVOUE, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 26/01/1915. *

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW MABEL, AND THREE CHILDREN, WHO MOVED TO 328 PICCADILLY STREET, KALGOORLIE, WESTERN AUSTRALIA.
HIS THREE BROTHERS, SERVED IN THE SCOTTISH RIFLES, THE BORDER REGIMENT AND WITH THE CANADIANS.
HE IS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 1, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.
