Purchon, John Edward

BORN GRIMSBY 1888. SON OF GEORGE EDWIN PURCHON (1864-1934) & SARAH ELIZABETH (PETTMAN) (1868-1925), OF 3 GILLETT STREET, HULL. A REGULAR SOLDIER. SERVED AS LANCE CORPORAL, WITH THE 10TH ROYAL HUSSARS CAVALRY. HE HAD SPENT SEVEN YEARS IN THE ARMY, AND SIX YEARS IN INDIA. HE WAS LYING WOUNDED FOR 10 DAYS BEFORE HE WAS RESCUED. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 11/11/1914, AGED 26, IN THE FIELD HOSPITAL AT WAMBRECHIES. SINCE RETURNING TO ENGLAND HE HAD LIVED WITH HIS FATHER ABOVE. HE WAS UNMARRIED AND 26 YEARS OLD. JOHN’S DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 14TH JANUARY 1915. * BURIED AT ASCQ COMMUNAL CEMETERY, NORD, FRANCE.

HIS FATHER LOST 3 SONS IN THE WAR & ANOTHER SON THOMAS PURCHON DIED IN 1921.

HIS BROTHERS WERE, JAMES ALBERT PURCHON, LOST OVERBOARD, ON 15/11/1915, AGED 25.
PRIVATE, CYRIL PURCHON, 8TH EYR, DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 12/06/1917, AGED 20.
