Reed, George Ernest

Driver, Alfred Reed and Private, George Ernest Reed, 13th EYR, of New George Street, Hull. Killed on the same day.

Born Hull 1893. Hull Pal. Mother Clara Reed lived above. Enlisted the Hull Pals in March 1915.  Served with the 13th East Yorkshire Regiment, in Egypt and France. He had survived the battles of the Somme and Oppy Wood and seen much fighting. Killed in action, by a shell explosion, on 30/07/1917, aged 24. A former dock labourer. Unmarried. His army effects were left to his mother, Clara.

His brother, Driver, Alfred Reed, RFA, died of head wounds on the same day – 30/07/1917, aged 26. They were the only two sons of Clara Reed. She was left with her only daughter and brother in law who served as a stoker in the Ronal Navy.
Both the Reed brothers are listed on the Danson Lane and New George Street memorials (Hull Daily Mail 03 November 1917)
