Ritchie, Henry Lawrence

BORN HULL 1889. PARENTS ANNA & THE LATE CHARLES RITZINGER. HE SERVED AS “RITCHIE” . HIS WIFE BEATRICE (FORD) LIVED AT 115 , SPRING STREET, HULL, (HULL MERCHANT NAVY ADDRESS). LOST AT SEA, 14/09/1916, AGED 27.
SS Inverbervie, built by Russell & Co., Port Glasgow in 1913 and owned at the time of her loss by Inverkip SS. Co. Ltd. (R. J. Rowat & Co.), Glasgow, was a British steamer of 4309 tons. On September 14th, 1916, Inverbervie, on a voyage from Cardiff & Messina to Taranto with a cargo of coal and 3 motor launches for the Royal Navy, was torpedoed and sunk by the Austrian submarine K.U.K. U4 (Rudolf Singule), 17 miles SxW from Cape Rizzuto. 6 persons were lost.
ML-230, ML-253, ML-255, the 3 British motor launches of 37 tons, were deck cargo of the Inverbervie. All three started drifting when Inverbervie sank and K.U.K. U-4 sank them with gunfire.
