BORN HULL 28/08/1886. SON OF WILLIAM RUFFLES (1862-1918) & ANNIE RAYWARD (1859-1943), OF 197 BELMONT STREET, HULL. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. EDUCATED AT HULL TRINITY SCHOOL. WORKED AT SEA. RECEIVED HIS MASTER MARRINER CERTIFICATE, ON 26/10/1907.

HE MARRIED HANNAH BROWN (1890-1968) AT COTTINGHAM, ON 31/08/1910. THEY LIVED AT 47 ESTCOURT STREET, HULL & 4 CEDAR GROVE, ESTCOURT STREET, HULL. THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN, JAMES, ELSIE AND EDITH.

SERVED AS A MARINER AND ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE. KILLED BY THE EXPLOSION AT HALIFAX HARBOUR, NOVA SCOTIA, ON 06/12/1917, AGED 31. HE LEFT £245 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOW, HANNAH, AT THIS PROBATE ADDRESS. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND THREE CHILDREN.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE TRINITY HOUSE NAVAL MEMORIAL. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON THE 11/01/1918. *
THE GREAT HALIFAX EXPLOSION, INVOLVING 4,000 TONS OF TNT, CAUSED BY A COLLISION AND THEN FIRE ON A FRENCH AMMUNITION SHIP, KILLED SOME 2,000 HALIFAX RESIDENTS AND WOUNDED A FURTHER 9,000. THE BLAST WAS THE LARGEST MAN MAN EXPLOSION, PRIOR TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS.
