BORN LITTLE CRESSINGHAM, NORFOLK, 07/08/1886. SON OF HENRY AND ELIZABETH SAMPLE, OF 12 DENTON STREET, AND 16 SLOE LANE, BEVERLEY. HE WAS WORKING ON A FARM HANDLING HORSES. MARRIED ROSANNA AND HAD ONE CHILD. MOVED TO HULL AT THE ABOVE ARMY ADDRESS. HIS SIBLINGS HAD ALSO MOVED TO HULL LIVING AT 6 WARNE TERRACE, WARNE STREET, SPRING BANK, WHERE HIS BROTHER FRED WORKED AS A GRAIN HOUSE LABOURER. JOHN ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS. SERVED WITH THE 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 13/11/1916, AGED 30. HE IS BURIED AT EUSTON ROAD CEMETERY, FRANCE.

HIS NAME APPEARS ON HENGATE WAR MEMORIAL, BEVERLEY. HE LEFT A WIDOW, ROSANNA AND THREE CHILDREN, WHO REPORTED HIS DEATH IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 04/12/1916.
HIS BROTHER PRIVATE, FREDERICK SAMPLE, 8TH EYR WHO ALSO ENLISTED IN HULL WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 09/04/1917. HIS OTHER HIS BROTHER, GUNNER, EDMUND SAMPLE, ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY, DIED IN FRANCE, ON 13/10/1917.
