Selle, George Frederick

PRIVATE GEORGE FREDERICK SELLE 12/1385. Born in October 1895, George was the third of four children to Henry and Mary Ann Selle, this address, North View Marfleet and 50 Woodhouse Street, Hull. An Engine Fitter in a Shipyard by trade, he enlisted at City Hall on 5th March 1915, joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. George was listed as missing during the fighting on the Somme on 13th November 1916, though he was identified and buried in John Copse British Cemetery No.2 “one and a quarter miles south east of Hebuterne”. Notification was sent to his parents though they had moved house and the landlord failed to forward it on. Henry and Mary Ann Selle went on hoping their son would turn up alive until January 1918 when word finally reached them. He found his final resting place at Euston Road Cemetery; he was 21 years old.
