Sergeant, Charles Westby

BORN HULL 1869. SON OF JOSEPH SERGEANT (1850-1905) & ASENATH WREGHIT (1849-1915), OF 11 RICHARD PLACE, CAMPBELL STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS). SERVED AS THE COOK ON THE STEAM SHIP, ‘POLO’. DROWNED 12/02/1918, AGED 48. COMMEMORATED ON THE TOWER HILL NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON.
SS Polo, built by Earle’s Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., Hull in 1913 and owned at the time of her loss by Ellerman’s Wilson Line, Ltd., Hull, was a British steamer of 1383 tons.
On February 12th, 1918, Polo, on a voyage from Hull to Alexandria with a cargo of coal and general cargo, was sunk by the German submarine UB-57 (Johannes Lohs), 6 miles SExE of St. Catherine’s Point. 3 persons were lost.
