BORN HULL 1896. (SCULCOATES). SON OF GEORGE LAWRENCE SHACKLES (1851-1926) & GERTRUDE MARY HOLMES (1862-1941), OF HESSLE (1901 CENSUS), ELIN LODGE, HORNSEA AND BRANTINGHAM, HULL. ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. HE WORKED FOR HIS SOLICITOR FATHER AS AN ARTICLED CLERK. HE WAS EDUCATED AT WINDERMERE AND SHREWSBURY SCHOOLS. HE ENLISTED AS A PRIVATE IN SEPTEMBER 1914, SERVING AS PRIVATE 10/208, 10TH EYR (HULL COMMERCIALS). POSTED TO EGYPT AND THEN FRANCE. HE WAS INVALIDED HOME WITH TRENCH FEVER. HE WAS COMMISSIONED IN JANUARY 1916 AND RETURNED TO FRANCE IN APRIL 1916. SERVED AS SECOND LIEUTENANT, 4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 11/05/1917.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH, IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 19TH MAY 1917. *
HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, SECOND LIEUTENANT, RONALD GUY SHACKLES, MC, SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 19/09/1918, AGED 19. THEIR SISTER, SERVED AS A NURSE.
