Smith, Alexander Gardiner

BORN HULL 17/11/1874. SON OF THOMAS TINDALL SMITH (1836-1906) AND MARY JANE CURTIS, OF 11 FLORENCE TERRACE, WATERLOO STREET, HULL AND ROOS.

HE MARRIED ON 06/06/1897, AT ST JAMES CHURCH, HULL. HIS WIFE MARY ELLEN JACKSON (BORN 25/09/1873), LIVED AT 35, REDBOURNE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). THEY HAD TWO CHILDREN, FLORENCE M. BORN ON 24/11/1902 AND CHARLES, BORN 28/01/1908.

PREVIOUS TO JOINING THE NAVAL RESERVE, HE WAS A FIREMAN ON A WILSON LINER. HE SERVED AS A STOKER IN THE ROYAL NAVY. HE WAS LOST AT SEA, WHEN HMS QUEEN MARY, EXPLODED AT THE BATTLE OF JUTLAND, ON 31/05/1916. 1,266 CREW WERE LOST, ONLY 18 SURVIVED.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH ON 9TH JUNE 1916. *

HIS ELDER BROTHER, ARTHUR SMITH WAS LOST ON THE SS “Tewfikieh”, ON 09/06/1918, AGED 53.
