Smith Alfred

Alfred Smith (1897-1916)

Born Beverley. Son of Colour Sergeant, George Smith and Mary Emma Smith, of Wood Lane, Beverley, Yorkshire. His father was from Leicester and had served in the East Yorkshire regiment for 21 years.

Alfred had eight siblings. He was educated at St Mary’s Boy School, Beverley and Beverley Grammar School. When war began, he was working as a clerk, in Leicester. He served with the 5th Yorkshire regiment and was killed in action, on 15/09/1916, aged 19. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

His army effects were left to his parents, Emma Mary Smith, of 54, North Marine Rd., Scarborough, and the late R.Q.M.S. George Smith.
