BORN BEVERLEY 1893. THIRD SON OF RICHARD SMITH AND MARY SUCH, OF CHERRY BURTON, NEAR BEVERLEY. HE RESIDED AT CHERRY BURTON, WORKING AS A HORSEMAN AT VICARAGE FARM, LUND WOLD.

HE ENLISTED AT BEVERLEY. SERVED WITH THE 18TH QUEEN MARY’S OWN HUSSARS. HE WENT TO FRANCE WITH THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE, ON 15/08/1914. WAS WOUNDED AT MONS AND AFTER A SHORT STAY IN SOSPITAL RETURNED TO ACTION UNTIL HE FELL. HE WAS A PROMISING SOLDIER. KILLED BY A TRENCH MORTAR, WHEN DIGGING AN ADVANCED TRENCH, ON 21/06/1917, AGED 24.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 03/07/1917. *

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, AT 3 BELLS COTTAGE, NEWGATE STREET (PENSION ADDRESS)

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE CHRRY BURTON WW1 MEMORIAL.
