BORN HULL 1896. TWIN SON OF JAMES AND REBECCA (BECKY) SMITH OF 32 JAMES STREET, BEAUMONT STREET, HULL (ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS). BROTHERS, HARRY AND TWIN, THOMAS, SISTERS, SARAH, HILDA AND BESSIE. HE WAS A PRINTER’S APPRENTICE, FOR MESSRS ISLAND, PRINTERS, HOLBORN STREET, HULL.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL ON 19/11/1915 AGED 19 AND 10 MONTHS. HIS ARMY MEDICAL RECORDS DESCRIBED HIM, AS 5 FOOT, 4.5 INCHES TALL, 34 INCH CHEST, 121 LBS WEIGHT. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 20983, 3RD EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED TO THE 115TH MACHINE GUN COMPANY ON 11/03/1916. KILLED BY A SHELL, ON 27/07/1917, AGED 21. HE IS BURIED AT ARTILLERY WOOD CEMETERY, BELGIUM.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 03/09/1917. *

UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, JAMES SMITH. HIS TWIN BROTHER, CYCLIST, THOMAS SMITH, WAS SERVING “SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND”, WHEN HE DIED.
