BORN HULL 1891. SON OF WILLIAM SPENCER (1847-1909) & ELLEN LEMON SPENCER (1849-1932). ONE OF NINE CHILDREN. FROM A COTTON WEAVING FAMILY. HE WORKED AS A WEAVER. HE MARRIED SELINA NORCROSS, ON 28/01/1915, AGED 25. LIVED AT 67 PARK ROAD, BARNOLDSWICK, NEAR COLNE, YORKSHIRE, AT THIS ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS.

HE ENLISTED AT KEIGHLEY, YORKS, ON 01/07/1916. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7.5 INCHES TALL, 124 LBS, 36.5 INCH CHEST, “WELL BUILT” AND BLUE EYES. SERVED WITH THE 10TH WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 15/12/1916. WOUNDED WITH SHELL SHOCK, ON 05/06/1917. HE REJOINED HIS BATTALION ON 16/09/1917. WAS REPORTED MISSING, PRESUMED KILLED, ON 20/09/2017, AGED 25. HE IS COMMEMORATED AT THE TYNE COT CEMETERY. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 82 DAYS. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, SELINA AT 67 PARK ROAD, BARNOLDSWICK, YORKSHIRE (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
