Stead, Harold Elliott

BORN HULL 04/01/1892. SON OF GEORGE ELLIOT STEAD (1837-1895) & SARAH ANN GRAY (1854-1923). HE HAD FIVE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. LOST ON HMT “SPEETON”, ON 31/12/1915, AGED 23. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 10/01/1916. *

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, KENT, UK.

NOTE: HIS BROTHER,  GEORGE HENRY STEAD, SS “GANNET”, DIED AT SEA ON 07/07/1916, AGED 41, AND IS COMMEMORATED ON THE TOWER HILL MEMORIAL. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND THREE CHILDREN.

THEIR OTHER BROTHER, HERBERT ELLIOTT STEAD, S/T “PERIM” DIED AT SEA, ON 21/05/1908, AGED 24. LEAVING A WIDOW AND THREE CHILDREN.

THEIR SISTER, ALICE MAUD STEAD, DIED AT HULL, IN 1918, AND LEFT EIGHT CHILDREN.

HMT Speeton, built by Cochrane & Sons Ltd., Selby in 1913 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 205 tons. On December 31st, 1915, HMT Speeton was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-7 (Georg Haag), off Lowestoft. 11 persons were lost.
