BORN BEVERLEY 1889. SON OF JOSEPH JOHN HURFORD (1846-1914) AND MARY JANE STOTHARD (1856-1921). HE MARRIED EMILY FLORENCE JEFFERSON (1889-1972), AT NEWINGTON PARISH CHURCH, HULL, ON 11/03/1909. WIFE EMILY FLORENCE STOTHARD LIVED AT 20, SISTER’S TERRACE, TADMAN STREET, HULL (ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS). EMPLOYED AS A FIREMAN AT SEA, BY MESSRS C D HOLMES, ENGLISH STREET, HULL. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT AND 7 INCHES TALL, 143 LBS WEIGHT, 37.5 INCH CHEST.

HE ENLISTED IN THE 2ND HULL PALS BATTALION, ON 04/01/1915. SERVED WITH THE 11TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. WOUNDED IN LEFT ARM AND THIGH IN SEPTEMBER 1917. PROMOTED TO CORPORAL, ON 29/06/1918. WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 08/09/1918, AGED 29. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER WROTE THAT “HE WAS ONE OF OUR BEST NCO’s IN THE COMPANY. ALWAYS CHEERFUL AND BRAVE.” HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON THE 8TH SEPTEMBER 1918, AGED 29, LEAVING A WIDOW AND FOUR CHILDREN.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 9TH OCTOBER 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
