Swift, James Henry

BORN HULL 1897. YOUNGEST SON OF VICTOR SWIFT (1864-1922) & ELLEN DONNISON (1865-1931), OF 6, MIDGLEY TERRACE, BEAN STREET, HULL. SON OF A GENERAL LABOURER. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS. HE WORKED AS A GROCER’S ASSISTANT AND ‘LOCK SMITH’, AT SPENCER STREET, HULL.

HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS ON 15/02/1915. SERVED WITH THE 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT (4TH HULL PALS), IN EGYPT. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 08/03/1916. KILLED IN ACTION, AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 19. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, VICTOR.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST MATTHEWS CHURCH WW1 MEMORIAL, BOULEVARD, WITH HIS BROTHER, TOM. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON, 05/12/1916. *

HE IS BURIED AT QUEENS CEMETERY, PUISIEUX, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “WORTHY OF EVERLASTING REMEMBRANCE”.

HE WAS ONE OF FOUR SONS AND A BROTHER IN LAW, SERVING IN FRANCE. HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, THOMAS CALLIS SWIFT, 203490, 8TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS, DIED AT YPRES, ON 16/08/1917, AGED 25.
