Herbert George Thistleton (1880-1917)

BORN HULL 1880. SON OF JOHN WILLIAM THISTLETON (1858-1909) & JANE ELIZABETH PENMAN (1856-1926), OF 1, DURHAM ROW, DURHAM STREET, HULL. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND THREE MARRIED SISTERS.

AN OIL MILL WORKER. DESCRIBED IN HIS ARMY RECORDS AS, JUST 5 FOOT TALL, 115 LBS WEIGHT , 35-38 INCH CHEST, TATTOOS ON BOTH ARMS, SMALL SCAR ON RIGHT WRIST. HE MARRIED SARAH ANN HARRISON (1878-1954), AT HULL, IN OCTOBER 1904. THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN, LIVED AT 15, MAY AVENUE, BEDFORD STREET, HULL (1911  CENSUS), 12, POPLAR CRESCENT, CHAPMAN STREET, HULL & 4, VICTORIA TERRACE, WILLIAMSON STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESSES).

HE ENLISTED ON 09/12/1915. CALLED UP ON 28/06/1916. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 10/12/1916. SERVED WITH THE 2ND DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 25/06/1917, AGED 37.

HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 199 DAYS.

BURIED AT PHILOSOPHE BRITISH CEMETERY, MAZINGARBE, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION,READS, “LOVED HONOURED AND REMEMBERED BY WIFE AND CHILDREN”.

HIS WIDOW WAS FINALLY AWARDED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION, ON 26 SHILLINGS AND 3 PENCE, ON 07/01/1918.
