Tolmie, George Lester

Born Spennymoor, Whitworth, Co. Durham, 1886. Son of John David Tolmie (1847-1924) and Mary Lester (1848-1923), of Rotherham; He had three brothers and two sisters.

Husband of Alice McQue Tolmie, of 45, Mintfield Grove, Holme Church Lane, Beverley. Enlisted as Sergeant, 9353, East Yorkshire Regiment. Transferred as Sergeant, 42518, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Posted to France, on 08/09/1917. Commissioned on 01/03/1918, as Second Lieutenant, 6th Northamptonshire Regiment. Died of wounds, on 19th November 1919, at the Empire Hospital, St Vincent’s Square, Middlesex. Buried Beverley. His name is recorded on the Beverley WW1 memorial. He left £323 to his widow Alice Tolmie and left a 3 year old son, George, at 59 Mintfield Grove, Beverley (Address from Medal Rolls Index Card).

His brother , Private, 15628, Sidney Alexander Maitland Tolmie, 6th Yorkshire Regiment, was killed in action, on 28/09/1916, aged 30 and is buried at Grandcourt, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France
