BORN HULL 1879. JAMES SERVED AS WEBSTER, BUT ‘KELLY’ WAS HIS TRUE FAMILY NAME. HIS WIFE, FLORENCE KELLY & TWO CHILDREN LIVED AT 14 NEWPORT TERRACE, CAMPBELL STREET, HULL.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 1317, EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED TO THE 3RD MACHINE GUN COMPANY.  DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 27/05/1916, AGED 37.

NEWS OF JAMES’ DEATH WAS SENT BY MISTAKE TO A MRS HALL, AT 10 ALFRED STREET, HESSLE ROAD. IT WAS FROM HIS 2ND LIEUTENANT, ADDRESSED TO “MRS WEBSTER OR KELLY.” IT REPORTED PTE. JAMES WEBSTER WAS KILLED IN A BOMBARDMENT ON OUR HEADQUARTERS, ON 27TH MAY 1916. “HE WAS A GOOD SOLDIER AND A MAN I VERY SINCERELY REGRET LOSING.” MRS HALL CONTACTED THE HULL DAILY MAIL TO RETURN THE MESSAGE TO THE RIGHTFUL OWNER, BUT SAYS HAD BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL. (HDM 2/6/16). I WONDER IF FLORENCE KELLY RECEIVED THE NEWS?
