Etton WW1 Memorial Cross, on Main Street, New Road, Beverley, lists the 50 names of men who served , including 5 who died in WW1

Born Etton, East Yorkshire, 1878. Second son of Charles and Elizabeth West, of Etton, Beverley, Yorkshire. Second of seven children. Employed as a Farm labourer, at Hay Wold, North Dalton (1911 Census)

Enlisted Driffield. Served with the 4th Yorkshire Hussars (Alexandra, Princes of Wales’ Own). Died of wounds, as a Prisoner of war, on 5 Jun 1918, aged 39

Buried in Metz, France. His grave inscription, reads “THEIR GLORY SHALL NOT BE BLOTTED OUT”

He is commemorated on the Etton Village WW1 Memorial, East Yorkshire
