Hull Pals Memorial Post. SGT ERNEST WILLIAM WOODS 12/1297. Born 26th April 1880, Ernest was the youngest of two sons to Thomas and Matilda Woods of 18 St James Square, Hull. A Brush maker by trade. On 07th July 1910, he married Annie Jeanette Gospel (1888-1966) at the St Barnabas Church, Hull. The couple moved to 1 Humber Road, North Ferriby where they had three children- Jeanette, Winifred and Bruce. He became a postman in North Ferriby.

Ernest enlisted at Hull City Hall joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. He was promoted to Serjeant, A Company, 12th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, No 12/297. He was killed in action on 26th May 1916 and buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery; he was 36 years old.

His army effects were left to his widow at this War Pension address.
