BORN NEWINGTON, HULL 1896. SON OF WILLIAM & ELLEN MAUD WOODWARD, OF 6, NABURN STREET, HULL AND 7, SELBY STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). A PAINTER’S APPRENTICE.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED IN THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE. ATTACHED TO THE 150TH TRENCH MORTAR BATTERY. KILLED AT MAMETZ, ON 16/09/1916, AGED 20.

UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO BOTH PARENTS AND HIS COUSIN, ETHEL SPENCER.
HE IS BURIED AT FLATIRON COPSE CEMETERY, MAMETZ, SOMME. HIS GRAVE IS INSCRIBED, “INTO THY HANDS O LORD WE COMMEND HIS SPIRIT”.

HE IS ALSO COMMEMORATED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.
