BORN HULL 1882. SON OF RICHARD BAGGLEY (1837-1910) & SELINA CROZIER (1847-1906). ONE OF EIGHT CHILDREN. SERVED ON THE STEAM TRAWLER “EROS”. LOST AT SEA ON 08/06/1918, AGED 35. COMMEMORATED ON THE TOWER HILL NAVY MEMORIAL, LONDON.
HIS MOTHER DIED IN 1906 AND HIS FATHER DIED IN 1910. HIS BROTHER ROBERT DIED IN 1919, AGED 35. ANOTHER BROTHER TOM DIED IN 1921, AGED 44. HE LEFT SISTER & BROTHER IN LAW ANNIE, HARRY, NELLIE & ALF. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 10/06/1919.
Eros, built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Beverley in 1903 and owned at the time of her loss by Great Northern Steamship Fishing Co. Ltd., Hull, was a British trawler of 181 tons. In 1917 the EROS was requisitioned by the Royal Navy as a fishing trawler (Fishery Reserve).
On June 8th, 1918, Eros was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-40 (Hermann Menzel), 36 miles ENE of Spurn Point, Firth of Forth. 6 persons were lost. The mine was from ‘barrage 45’ and laid on June 8, 1918.
