BORN HULL 1879. SON OF MRS MARY BATES, OF 7 KINGSTON AVENUE, LIVERPOOL STREET, HULL. THIS WAS HIS 1918 MILITARY VOTERS ADDRESS. A FORMER LABOURER for HARGREAVES BROTHERS, GIPSYVILLE.
DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT SIX INCHES TALL, 36 INCHS TALL, 105 LBS, BLUES EYES, BROWN HAIR. ENLISTED BEVERLEY, 11/09/1914, GIVING HIS AGE AS 32. HE SERVED WITH THE 3RD AND 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENTS. POSTED TO FRANCE, BETWEEN, 13/07/1915 TO 16/11/1915. DISCHARGED 27/03/1916, WITH CHRONIC BRONCHITIS, CAUSED BY EXPOSURE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER. DIED OF TUBERCULOSIS, ON 29/11/1919, AGED 40. HE IS BURIED IN HULL WESTERN CEMETERY.
HIS SON, COPORAL THOMAS BATESD, ROUYAL ENGINEERS WAS GASSED AND WOUNDED IN NOVEMBER 1916 AND IS PICTURED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 21/12/1916.
