BORN LOUTH, LINCS 1897. KNOWN AS ‘CHARLIE’. SON OF GEORGE AND MARY BELL, 21 BOXWOOD AVENUE, LEE SMITH STREET (1901 CENSUS) AND LATER MARFLEET AVENUE. HIS FATHER WAS A HULL GRAVE DIGGER. ENLISTED HULL. KILLED IN ACTION AT SERRE ON 13/11/1916. BEFORE THE ATTACK, HE TOSSED A COIN WITH PTE SURFLEET, TO DECIDE WHO WOULD STAY BACK TO TRAIN NEW DRAFTS. HE LOST THE ‘TOSS’ AND WAS THEN KILLED IN THE ATTACK, AGED 19.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, HARRY BELL 14/214, WHO JOINED UP WITH HIM SURVIVED THE WAR.
