Bell, Edward Rider

BORN PRESTON, HULL 1888. SON OF EDWARD & HANNAH MARIA BELL, of 25 WESTMINSTER AVENUE, HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL.

BEFORE THE WAR HE WAS THE ASSISTANT MANAGER OF HULL PICTURE PALACE. EDUCATED AT CRAVEN STREET SCHOOL AND HULL TECHNICAL COLLEGE. HE WAS AN APPRENTICE ACCOUNTANT, AT PARLIAMENT STREET, HULL, BEFORE JOINING HULL PALACE. ALSO AN ATHLETE, WHO HAD WON MAY PRIZES.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. WAS KILLED ON 05/11/1916, AGED 29.

HE WAS KILLED BY SHELL FIRE. HE HAD JUST RECEIVED A PARCEL FROM HOME, WHICH WAS SHARED BETWEEN HIS FRIENDS. HIS PERSONAL ITEMS WERE RETURNED TO HIS MOTHER.

EDWARD RIDER BELL IS RECORDED ON THE SPYVEE STREET & ST MARK’S STREET MEMORIALS. HE IS COMMEMORATED AT THIEPVAL, ON THE SOMME.

HIS DEATH WAS ALSO REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 29TH NOVEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
