SON OF GEORGE SEPTIMUS BENSON (1861-1938) & ELIZABETH ANN BISHOP (1864-1945), OF 4, JOSEPHINE TERRACE, BEAN STREET (1901 CENSUS), 38, TADMAN STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS) AND 34, BACHELER STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). A LABOURER, HE HAD TWO BROTHERS, GEORGE AND WILLIAM, ONE SISTER JESSIE BENSON AND ONE HALF SISTER, ETHEL MAY BISHOP, WHO ALL LIVED AT 38, TADMAN STREET, HULL.
HE WORKED AS A LABOURER. HIS ARMY MEDICAL RECORDS, DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 7 INCHES TALL, 32-34 INCH CHEST, 106 LBS WEIGHT, “POOR” PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 2ND MARCH 1916. CALL UP FOR SERVICE, ON 6TH OCTOBER 1916. HE HAD A POOR DISCIPLINARY RECORD – LATE AND ABSENT ON PARADE, OVERSTAYING A PASS, SWEARING AT AN NCO, THREATENING TO OVERTURN AN ORDER, IMPROPERLY DRESSED AND DIRTY EQUIPMENT.
FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 2935, AND 202862, 5TH SCOTTISH RIFLES. TRANSFERRED TO THE 13TH ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 20/02/1918. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 28/03/1918, AGED 20. COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL, FRANCE.
