Binnington, William Henry

BORN ELLOUGHTON 1875. ENLISTED HESSLE. LIVED SWANLAND. WIFE ANNIE BINNINGTON & 2 CHILDREN. FARM LABOURER. REPORTED AS A HULL CASUALTY IN HDM 19/2/18.
William Henry Binnington was born in Elloughton on 21 January 1885 to Henry, a farm labourer, and Jane Binnington. Henry died in 1887 and it is not known what happened to Jane. At the time of the 1891 Census William Henry was living with Isaac and Amelia Langham at East End in Walkington. He was described as their stepson, as was his older brother Walter, at the same address. By 1901 he was in Risby Park, near Walkington, employed as a plough lad and living with a farm foreman, William Gill, and his wife
Martha. In 1911 Henry was in Swanland working as a bricklayer’s labourer and living with Alfred and Jane Pinchbeck. He enlisted in Hessle with the 7th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, but it is not known when.
The Arras offensive of April/May 1917 included an attack on the Hindenburg Line at Rouex. On 12 May 1917, the day Henry Binnington died, the 7th Battalion War Diary shows they were involved in the attacks on “Charlie”, “Curly” & “Cupid” trenches. Henry’s body was never found and his name is one of 35,000 which appear on the Arras Memorial. These names represent servicemen from the UK, South Africa and New Zealand who died in the Arras Sector from Spring 1916 to August 1918. William Henry Binnington’s name also appears on the Brantingham War Memorial. He was reported missing, in the Hull Daily Mail, on 12/09/1917.*
