BORN NEWINGTON, 1884. SON OF GEORGE BIRD (1853-1929) AND SARAH BEST (1855-1935), OF 22, GLASGOW STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS. THREE SONS WERE KILLED IN THE WAR.
A FORMER HULL POLICEMAN ON THE HULL MIDLAND STREET & PORTER STREET PATROL AND FORMER SOLDIER. HE MARRIED ELSIE ELIZABETH PORTER, AT HULL IN 1914. SHE LIVED AT 226, HESSLE ROAD, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HE WAS RECALLED TO THE 2ND COLDSTREAM GUARDS AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR. POSTED TO FRANCE, WITH THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. KILLED IN ACTION, AT YPRES, ON 26/10/1914, AGED 30. HE LEFT WIDOW ELSIE & DAUGHTER, ELSIE GERTRUDE, BORN ON 27/12/1914.
HIS BROTHER, CSM, ALBERT BIRD, 1ST COLDSTREAM GUARDS, WAS AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL, AND WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 27/09/1918, AGED 27.
WILLIAM AND ALBERT BIRD ARE REMEMBERED ON ST JOHN THE BAPTIST, WW1 MEMORIAL, NEWINGTON, HULL.
HIS OTHER BROTHER , GEORGE BIRD, 1ST NORTHANTS WAS ALSO KILLED IN ACTION.
