Booth, Alfred Arthur

BORN HULL 22/07/1882. SON OF HENRY & THE LATE ROSE BOOTH, AT 21, PARAGON STREET, HULL. A FORMER SEAMAN AND ROYAL NAVY RESERVIST FOR SEVEN YEARS. HIS WIFE MAUD ALICE BOOTH LIVED AT 79, SPRING STREET, HULL (HDM ADDRESS). HE EMIGRATED TO AUSTRALIA. ENLISTED AT MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, ON 30/11/1914, AGED 32. LEFT FOR ALEXANDRA ON 04/04/1915, AND SERVED AS A GUNNER, WITH THE HEAVY BATTERY, AT GALLIPOLI, FROM 15/07/1915. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 01/04/1916. WHILE AT ETAPLES, FRANCE, HE WAS CHARGED FOR BEING DRUNK, REFUSING TO OBEY AN ORDER, BEING ABSENT, RESISTING AN ESCORT, AND USING THREATENING LANGUAGE. HE ALSO SPENT 74 DAYS IN HOSPITAL WITH VD. HE REJOINED HIS UNIT IN BELGIUM, ON 30/07/1915. HE ACCIDENTALLY SHOT HIMSELF AND DIED, ON 15/11/1917, AGED 35. BURIED AT THE HUTS, MILITARY CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “A SILENT THOUGHT A SECRET TEAR WILL KEEP HIS MEMORY EVER DEAR”.
HE LEFT BROTHER, HENRY RANDAL BOOTH, AND SISTERS, MAUD, BLANCHE, AND NORAH BERGWITZ, WHO LIVED AT 12 GEE STREET, HULL (HULL DAILY MAIL 17/12/1912).
