BORN HULL 16/05/1889. SON OF FREDERICK GOODSON BOXHALL (1848-1933) & REBECCA GROVES (1854-1924), OF 165 COLTMAN STREET, HULL. HE HAD ONE BROTHER AND THREE SISTERS.
EMPLOYED AS A CHIEF OFFICER IN THE MERCHANT MARINE. HE BECAME A SHIP’S MASTER ON 27/09/1913.
HE MARRIED KATHLEEN CANTILLON ON 02/10/1913. THEIR DAUGHTER ALSO CALLED KATHLEEN. HIS SHIP WAS SUNK BY SUBMARINE AND HE DIED 23/05/1917, AGED 28. HE IS BURIED IN MALTA’S NAVAL CEMETERY.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HDM 29/05/1917. HIS ONLY BROTHER CHARLES BOXHALL ALSO SERVED AT SEA.
SS England, built by Northumberland SB. Co., Ltd., Newcastle in 1906 and owned at the time of her loss by F. Drughorn, Ltd., London, was a British steamer of 3798 tons. On May 23rd, 1917, England, on a voyage from Cardiff & Bizerta to Malta with a cargo of coal, was sunk by the German submarine U-65 (Hermann von Fischel), 40 miles SxE of Cape Bon. The Master and 2 crew members were killed.
