BORN HULL 1892. KNOWN AS HAROLD BROWN. YOUNGEST SON OF WILLIAM THOMAS BROWN (1867-1948) & ELIZA FINLAYSON (1867-1949), OF 13 CENTRAL STREET, HULL. SON OF A JOINER. HE HAD ONE BROTHER, ROBERT AND TWO SISTERS, KATE AND IVY. HE WAS EMPLOYED AS A BOOK-BINDER FOR MESSRS. GODDARD, WALKER & BROWN, SILVER STREET, HULL.
HE MARRIED JANEY HAWKSLEY (1892-1963), IN HULL, IN APRIL 1915, & LIVED AT 11, LIME TREE AVENUE, GARDEN VILLAGE, HULL (1911 CENSUS). THEY HAD ONE SON, HAROLD.
HE ENLISTED WITH THE 6TH EAST YORKSHIRE PIONEERS, “D” COMPANY. SERVED AS LANCE CORPORAL. DEPARTED FROM LIVERPOOL, ON30TH JUNE 1915. LANDED AT SULVA BAY, ON 7TH AUGUST 1915. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 09/08/1915, AGED 22. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE HELLES MEMORIAL, TURKEY.
HAROLD NEVER SAW HIS SON HAROLD, BORN ON 25/09/1915. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, JENNIE, AT 142, ROSEMEAD STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SHE LATER EMIGRATED TO NEW ZEALAND.
HE WAS KILLED WITH HIS FELLOW WORKMATE, PTE, THOMAS HUDSON, 9th WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, ON THE SAME DAY AT GALLIPOLI. THEIR DEATHS AND PHOTOGRAPHS ARE BOTH REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 10TH SEPTEMBER 1915. *
