Harold Burkitt

BORN 1889.  SON OF WILLIAM BURKITT (1866-1901) AND MARY ANN BEAUTYMAN (1867-1950), OF 17, GLENCOE AVENUE, SCARBORO STREET, HULL – 1911. A BRUSH MAKER.

MARRIED AT SCULCOATES, HULL IN 1915, WIFE MRS FLORENCE GERTRUDE (BEECH) & 2 YEAR DAUGHTER, FLORENCE G, LIVED AT 7, THORESBY AVENUE, FLINTON STREET, HULL.

SERVED AS A DECK HAND IN THE ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE. HE DIED, SERVING ON HMS “DREEL CASTLE”, ON 31/10/1918, AGED 29.

HMS Dreel Castle was an armed drifter which was hired and commissioned 02.02.15 and became an Auxiliary Patrol Nominal Depot Ship at Falmouth, Penzance and the Scillies. Some of the men nominally allocated to this ship would have been based ashore.

It was returned from hire on 16.09.19 but saw further service as a minsweeper 1939-40. It was renamed Maria Smith in 1918 but reverted to Dreel Castle in WW2.
