BORN HULL 1885. SON OF JOHN HENRY & BETSY BURTON, OF 34 WELLSTED STREET. HIS WIFE POLLY BURTON LIVED 24 GREEN LANE, HULL.
HE WAS WELL KNOWN AS A FISHERMAN AT HULL FISH COCKS. EMPLOYED AY MESSRS KEHALL BROS & BEECHING. HE WAS A THIRD HAND ON ONE OF THE TRAWLERS, DURING THE ‘RUSSIAN OUTRAGE’.
ENLISTED HULL AUGUST 1914. SERVED WITH THE 7TH KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. HE HAD BEEN IN FRANCE FOR TWO YEARS AND FOUR MONTHS, DURING WHICH TIME HE HAD NEVER BEEN HOME. HE WAS REPORTED WOUNDED, MISSING, THEN KILLED ON 01/10/1916, AGED 31.
HE LEFT WIDOW, POLLY BIRTON AND TWO CHILDREN, WALTER AND NELLIE, AT 24, GREEN LANE, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HER WEEKLY WAR PENSION OF 22/11 WAS REDUCED WHEN THEIR SON WALTER (1905-1921) DIED.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 7TH SEPTEMBER 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *.
