BORN ARBROATH 1866. SON OF DAVID & JESSIE ELIZA CAIRD. HE MARRIED IN 1901, AT BRIDLINGTON. HUSBAND OF ELIZABETH MARGARET (CROWE), OF 41, WILBERT LANE, BEVERLEY, 30, DE LA POLE AVENUE AND 39, GELNCOE STREET, HULL. A MARINE ENGINEER. HIS NAME IS RECORDED IN THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY RECORDS.

SS Salmo, built by Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., Dundee in 1900 and owned at the time of her loss by Ellerman’s Wilson Line, Ltd., Hull, was a British steamer of 1721 tons.
On April 7th, 1917, Salmo, on a voyage from Oporto to Liverpool with general cargo, was sunk by the German submarine U-60 (Karl Georg Schuster), 210 miles northwest of Fastnet. 3 persons were lost.
