UNMARRIED. BEFORE ENLISTING, HE WORKED AS A FISH CARTER AND MERCHANT, IN HIS FATHER’S FISH BUSINESS AND WAS WELL KNOWN AT HULL BILLINGSGATE AND CENTRAL HULL. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 2.5 INCHES TALL, 34.5-37 INCH CHEST, 119 LBS WEIGHT,
HE ENLISTED AT HULL, ON 02/03/1916. CALLED UP ON 04/12/1916. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 8694, 1/4TH EYR. TRANSFERRED ON 02/02/1917, AS MACHINE GUNNER, 85302, IN 275TH COMPANY, MGC. EMBARKED TO BASRA, IRAQ, ON 11/10/1917. BASED AT RAMADI, FROM 24/04/1918.
HE DIED FROM CHOLERA, IN BAGHDAD HOSPITAL, ON 14/07/1918, AGED 24. HE DIED OF CHOLERA, AT BAGDHAD HOSPITAL, ON 14/07/1918, AGED 24. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY, FOR 2 YEARS AND 135 DAYS.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 30TH JULY 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HE IS BURIED AT BAGHDAD (NORTH GATE) WAR CEMETERY, IRAQ. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “THY PURPOSE LORD WE CANNOT SEE BUT ALL IS WELL THAT’S DONE BY THEE”
