ENLISTED IN HULL., MARCH 1915. SERVED IN FRANCE FROM AUGUST 1916. KILLED AT PASCHENDAELE, ON 14/12/1917, AGED 19. UNMARRIED. HE IS COMMEMORATED AT THE TYNE COT MEMORIAL, BELGIUM. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER, WROTE, “YOU SON WAS A PROMISING NON COMMISSIONED OFFICER AND HE WILL BE A REAL LOSS TO THE COMPANY.”
HIS BROTHER, DRUMMER, JOHN CHAPMAN, 5TH YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, HAD DIED OF WOUNDS AT PASSCHENDAELE, ON 28/10/1917, AGED 22. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE BEVERLEY’S WW1 MEMORIAL, MEMORIAL GARDENS.
