BORN LIVERPOOL 1867. SON OF JOHN FOSTER & ANNIE ELIZABETH.HIS WIFE ELIZA (SAWYER) LIVED AT THIS ADDRESS WITH THEIR DAUGHTER CARRIE. HIS SON WILLIAM CHEETHAM WAS LOST AT SEA ON 31/10/1916. ALFRED CHEETHAM SERVED IN FOUR POLAR EXPEDITIONS, TWICE WITH SCOTT AND TWICE WITH SHACKLETON. HE HAD SAILED IN BOTH THE ‘MORNING TERRA NOVA.’ AND ‘ENDURANCE’. HE WORE THE POLAR MEDAL 1914-16, PLUS OTHER DECORATIONS AND HAD BEEN RECOMMENDED FOR THE CLASP. ALFRED LOST HIS LIFE WHEN HIS SHIP WAS TORPEDOED BY AN ENEMY SUBMARINE, ON 22/08/1918, AGED 51. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE YORKSHIRE POST ON 2ND SEPTEMBER 1918.. *
SS Prunelle, built by Bergsunds Mek. Verks., Stockholm in 1874 and owned at the time of her loss by The Shipping Controller (H. W. & C. M. Ezard), London, was a British steamer of 579 tons.On August 22nd, 1918, Prunelle, on a voyage from London to Dundee with a cargo of jute, was sunk by the German submarine UB-112 (Wilhelm Rhein), 2 miles southeast of Blyth. 12 persons were lost.
