BORN HULL 05/01/1890. SON OF SAMUEL (RNRT) HMS ‘WALLINGTON’ & SOPHIA CHORLTON, OF 4 LONDESBOROUGH TERRACE, MARMADUKE STREET, HULL AND 261 NORTH BOULEVARD, HULL. A SINGLE MAN. HE HAD A FIANCEE, MARY. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE HULL GARDENER SOCIETY AND A FISHERMAN, WITH THE GREAT NORTHERN STEAM FISHING COMPANY. HE WAS LOST AT SEA, ON A MINESWEEPER, ON 26/09/1917, AGED 27. HIS BROTHER IN LAW, SEAMAN, A. E. WHITING LIVED AT THE SAME ADDRESS AND WAS ALSO LOST AT SEA.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 03/10/1917 & 27/09/1918.
Ocean Star, built by The Montrose Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., Montrose in 1907 and operated (hired) at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy drifter of 92 tons. On September 26th, 1917, Ocean Star was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-50 (Rudolf Seuffer), off the Nab lightvessel. Lost with all hands, 10 in total.
