BORN SCUNTHORPE 12/04/1895. SON OF ROBERT CLARK & LILLIAN JOHNSON, OF ST JOHNS HOUSE, SHAFTESBURY AVENUE, INGS ROAD, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). EDUCATED AT GREYSTONES SCHOOL, SCARBOROUGH. WAS A DISPENSER. HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 23/09/1915. HE JOINED THE ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS (RAMC) SERVING WITH THE ST JOHN’S AMBULANCE BRIGADE. HE SERVED WITH THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE, FROM MARCH 1916. HE WAS KILLED DURING AN AIR RAID, ON THE ST JOHN’S AMBULANCE BRIGADE, HOSPITAL, ETAPLES, ON 20/05/1918. AGED 23. HE WAS BURIED AT ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY, FRANCE. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, ROBERT. HE LEFT SISTER, GLADYS, AND BROTHER, EDGAR.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON HULL’S RAMC WENLOCK BARRACKS ROLL OF HONOUR. HIS DEATH WAS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY, ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER, WROTE “I HAD THE GREATEST POSSIBLE RESPECT FOR YOUR SON. HE WAS ONE OF THE MOST HONEST AND CONSCIENTIOUS WORKERS, I HAVE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE TO MEET, AND I FEEL HIS DEATH MOST KEENLY”.
