Claxton, John Allison

BORN BRIDLINGTON 1896. SON OF ALLISON CLAXTON (1865-1939) & MARY WILSON (1865-1936), OF 39, HADDON STREET, HULL, HAWTHORNE AVENUE, HULL (WAR PENSION & CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF NINE CHILDREN. BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED AS A NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY ENGINE CLEANER SINCE 19.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 14/09/1914. HIS ARMY RECORDS, DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT 6 INCHES TALL, 122 LBS WEIGHT, 35.5 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, LIGHT HAIR, CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION. “INDUSTRIOUS, SOBER AND HONEST”. HE LEFT WITH THE 6TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT TO THE DARDANELLES, ON 30/06/1915. WAS SHOT IN THE RIGHT LEG, AT GALLIPOLI, ON 07/08/1915. TRANSFERRED TO FRANCE ON 03/07/1916. WOUNDED BY A BULLET IN THE LEFT KNEE AT THE BATTLE OF SERRE, ON 24/11/1916. INVALIDED TO ENGLAND ON 11/12/1916. TRANSFERRED TO THE 3RD EYR BATTALION. HE WAS DISCHARGED FROM THE ARMY, ON 07/06/1917, HAVING SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 2 YEARS AND 271 DAYS. HE DIED ON 21/06/1917, AT COTTINGHAM SANATORIUM.

HE IS BURIED AT HULL WESTERN CEMETERY. AGED 21. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 7TH SEPTEMBER 1917.
