BORN GILBERDYKE 1893. SON OF JOHN CLAYTON (1852-1905) & ELIZABETH CAWOOD (1858-1938), OF SHYLAM LODGE, GILBERDYKE. ONE OF EIGHT CHILDREN. HE WAS A HAY CUTTER IN GILBERDYKE, BEFORE MOVING TO HULL. HE LIVED WITH HIS SISTERS JENNIE & GERTIE AT THIS ADDRESS. HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 12/12/1915. EX. PRIVATE, 21546, 11TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE TRANSFERRED TO THE 31ST MACHINE GUN COMPANY ON 29/11/1916. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS NEARLY 5 FOOT 10 INCHES TALL, 36 INCH CHEST, WEIGHING 136 LBS. SENT TO FRANCE 16/06/1916. HE DIED OF WOUNDS ON 25/04/1918, AGED 24. HE WAS A SINGLE MAN AND HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS MOTHER ELIZABETH. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 02/09/1918. HE WAS BURIED AT MORBECQUE BRITISH CEMETERY, NORD, FRANCE
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, ARTHUR CLAYTON, 25TH NFUS (TYNESIDE IRISH) WAS KILLED AT THE SOMME, ON 1/09/1917, AGED 26 AND IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL..
