BORN HULL 1893. SON OF EMMA E & THE LATE WALTER HENRY CLEARY, OF 42 EDGECUMBE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). ELDEST OF TWO CHILDREN. BROTHER TO DORIS CLEARY. A PAPER WORKER. HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL COMMERCIALS PALS BATTALION. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 10/958 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION. HE SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. AND WAS KILLED AT OPPY WOOD ON THURSDAY 3RD MAY 1917, AGED 24. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER WALTER. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING AND AT ST JOHN CHURCH, NEWLANDS, HULL.
