BORN HULL 1887. SON OF CHARLES (1852-1925) AND JEMIMA COLLINGWOOD (1859-1931), OF 11 GROVE TERRACE, COURTNEY STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS). HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND FIVE SISTERS. WORKED AS A PAINTER & PAPER HANGER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 4.5 INCHES TALL, 119 LBS WEIGHT, 35-37 INCH CHEST SIZE, BLUE EYES, LIGHT BROWN HAIR.
HE MARRIED HARRIET JANE CHAMBERLAIN (1885-1927) AT HULL IN 1907, AGED 20. THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN. LIVED AT 4 LEONARD’S AVENUE, COURTNEY STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, ON 07/09/1914. SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. PROMOTED CORPORAL, ON 01/03/1915. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 13/05/1916, AGED 29. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 250 DAYS. BURIED AT SUCRERIE MILITARY CEMETERY, FRANCE.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 27TH MAY 1916 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. * HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON HULL’S COURTNEY STREET ROLL OF HONOUR.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. CORPORAL CHARLES COLLINGWOOD 11/139. Born in 1887, Charles was one of eight children to Charles and Jemima Collingwood. He married Harriet Chamberlain and the couple had three children Alice, Dorothy and Charles Jnr. The family resided at 7 Leonards Avenue, Courtney Street, Hull. A Painter and Decorator before the war, Charles queued outside City Hall on 7th September 1914 and joined the fledgling 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment; ‘The Tradesmen’. Originally joining as a Private, Charles was promoted to Corporal on 1st March 1915 as the battalion trained for their first posting. That came in December when they sailed for Alexandria in Egypt to protect the all-important Suez CanaL. Arriving in France in March 1916 their real war began. A member of the machine gun section, Charles was shot by a German sniper and despite the best efforts of medics, died of wounds on 13th May 1916, aged 29. He is buried at Sucrerie Military Cemetery and is commemorated on the Courtney Street Roll Of Honour. His grave inscription, reads, “Deeply Lamented”.
