HIS SISTER, MRS ADA MARSHALL, LIVED AT 8 ETTY’S TERRACE, STRICKLAND STREET, HULL. HE WORKED AS A LABOURER. ENLISTED IN BEVERLEY, ON 19/10/1914, ON HIS 28TH BIRTHDAY. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 11.5 INCHES TALL, 200 LBS WEIGHT, 39.5 INCH CHEST, BROWN EYES, DARK HAIR AND COMPLEXION, A “VERY GOOD” PHYSIQUE, AND TATTOS ON LEGS, ARMS AND BODY. HE TRAINED AT BELTON PARK AND WHITLEY BAY. HE SERVED WITH 6TH EAST YORKSHIRE PIONEER BATTALION. POSTED TO THE DARDENELLES, ON 30/06/1915. CAPTURED AT GALLIPOLI, ON 09/08/1915. DIED OF TYPHUS, AS A TURKISH PRISONER OF WAR, IN ANGORA, ON 16/03/1917, AGED 30. HE HAD SERVED FOR 1 YEAR AND 147 DAYS, MOSTLY IN CAPTIVITY. HE IS BURIED AT BAGHDAD (NORTH GATE) WAR CEMETERY, IRAQ. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 05/10/1917. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS ELDER BROTHER, JOHN AND SISTER, ADA.
